A new study says getting behind the wheel when dehydrated makes you just as hazardous as being under the influence of alcohol.

The research from Loughborough University showed drivers who drank 25 ml (a couple of sips) of water an hour, instead of the recommended 200 ml (a third of a pint), made twice the number of mistakes as those who were well-hydrated.

Medics say that on the whole we’re a pretty parched lot.

In March, a study warned that the number of people taken to A&E with painful kidney stones has soared. According to Professor Tom Sanders, of King’s College London, dehydration is said to be the most likely cause.

Kidney stones form when calcium deposits in urine clump to form crystals in the kidneys and then get trapped in the urethra. When a person is dehydrated, the concentration of deposits is higher.

Emergency admissions for the problem have more than doubled, from 5,063 cases in 2003-2004 to 11,937 in 2013-2014.

HUNDREDS OF IMMIGRANTS DROWNS IN MEDITERRANEAN SEA ON THEIR WAY TO EUROPE

Italy on Sunday called for an emergency summit of European Union leaders following the latest migrant boat tragedy in the Mediterranean.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said Rome would be seeking the extraordinary meeting after up to 700 people were feared to have drowned when a boat carrying them towards Italy capsized off Libya.

"We are working to ensure this meeting can be held by the end of the week. It has to be a priority," Renzi told a press conference, describing the people smuggling behind the migrant crisis as "scourge" that Europe had to address.

The Italian initiative came as the EU came under fire over what NGOs termed a tragedy that may have been avoided if Italy had maintained its large-scale search-and-rescue operation off its southern shores.

The Mare Nostrum mission was suspended at the end of last year after Italy's EU partners refused to help with the ongoing cost of running it amid a bitter row over whether the life-saving operation was unintentionally encouraging migrants and asylum-seekers to attempt the perilous crossing from north Africa to Europe.
